I was thrilled to receive this painting from Nishad Dharmamer, whose mother Madhuri is a member of the self-help group that the Anita Dongre Foundation runs in Charoti, a village in Maharashtra. He is a talented young man and I would love to see people support him – he is on Instagram under the name artistic_blends_
The self-help group we support in Charoli, which is a tribal village that faced a huge unemployment problem, is adopted under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) scheme. The Anita Dongre Foundation set up a community-focussed tailoring unit and trained local women in cutting, sewing and finishing garments. Over the years, the number of women working with us, and the number of machines have increased and they now produce a range of garments, including tops, tunics, palazzos, kurtis, bundis, and men’s kurtas.
As a foundation, our goal is to equip women with the skills and confidence they need to become self-reliant and independent. And this lovely piece of art from Nishad is a wonderful souvenir for me.
